Arequipa and Colca Canyon

This is one of our favourite parts of Peru! The city of Arequipa is beautiful, the climate is perfect, and the scenery and wildlife in Colca Canyon have to be seen to be believed! Add to that the great musuems and sites of historical interest and you could easily spend a couple of weeks here alone!

Arequipa - the White City

Nestled in the foothills of the Andes, and surrounded by snow-capped volcanoes (dormant!), you don't get many better locations for a city than that of Arequipa.

If you then build the historic centre entirely out of the local white volcanic rock, and if you make all the buildings really beautiful as well, you're probably onto a winner! Just to make sure, add in the huge convent of Santa Catalina and the historic old quarters like Yanahuara, and you've got one of the best destinations in Peru!

Colca Canyon

Just a few hours outside Arequipa, you get to the stunning Colca Canyon. Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA, it's one of THE destinations in Peru for nature lovers and if you want to see flocks of wild vicunas and alpacas, as well as the legendary Andean condors, then this is the place for you.
