TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE - THE NEW AMAZON HOTSPOT

Tambopata Rainforest

Deep in the Amazon Basin

The Amazon basin is an enormous area, and happily much of it in Peru is covered by National Parks and Reserve. One of the newest of these, created in 1990 is the Tambopata National Reserve. Located in the south-eastern corner of Peru, it covers 3.5 million acres and provides a refuge for some of the Amazon's most endangered wildlife.

From jaguars to giant otters, macaws to monkeys, Tambopata offers excellent wildlife-spotting opportunities and also has the advantage of being just a short flight from either Cusco or Lima, so it fits easily into most Peru holiday itineraries.

So what can we see?

All the main wildlife "must-sees" of the rest of the Amazon basin are present, but Tambopata is also special in that it covers not just primary rainforest but also the "pampas" eco-system of Amazonian savannah, which offers a variety of species not seen in most of the Amazon rainforest. Taken together, the Tambopata and contiguous Madidi reserves cover an area two-thirds the size of Costa Rica, so you can just imagine how species-rich the area is.

A full list is obviously too long to give here, but giant otters, jaguars, sloths, river dolphins, macaws, parrots, monkeys, white caimans, black caimans, tapirs, eagles and anacondas are just some of the species to be found. Altogether there are over 103 mammal species, 90 types of amphibian, 1300 butterfly species and countless types of birds.

Jungle lodges in Tambopata

Another point in Tambopata's favour is that it houses some of the best of Peru's jungle lodges. There is a wide range of options, from simple but functional posadas to top-of-the-range deluxe lodges. For a full list see some of the jungle lodges we work with, or just speak to us to get a better idea of your options.

You can even design an itinerary to take in more than one lodge so that you get to cover the different eco-systems of the Tambopata, Heath and Madid reserves to really maximise your wildlife-spotting opportunities.
