The Peruvian government announced today that it will present a demand to the United States that it returns thousands of artefacts taken from the famous lost Inca city of Machu Picchu and which are currently in the posession of the Universtiy of Yale.
The items of archaeological interest were taken from Machu Picchu in 1916 by the former Yale student, Hiram Bingham, who was the person who first brought Machu Picchu to international attention. Their presence in the US has caused controversey ever since but now Peru's government has decided to take this step after 3 years of negotiations have broken down.
The real reason for the change in the Peruvian government's attitude is that they want the artefacts returned in time to act as a centrepiece in the celebrations planned for 2011 - the 100th anniversary of Machu Picchu's re-discovery; get planning your Peru holidays now!
