MACHU PICCHU RE-OPENS - 01/04/10

To the relief and delight of Peru holiday-makers, the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu re-opened to the public today, following the successful repair of the railway line between Piscacucho and Aguas Calientes - the village at the foot of the Machu Picchu mountain. Between Piscacucho and Cusco, a coach service is in operation to allow normal tourist services to resume. Full rail operations are planned to begin between Cusco and Aguas Calientes at some point in late May or June, but much will depend on the speed with which engineers can clear the terrain for this new route.
