Problems hit the premier Peru holiday destination yesterday causing problems for thousands of people on holiday in Peru. Supporters and former railway workers for the company previously charged with running the railway line between Cusco and Machu Picchu launched strike action against the railway line and stations, preventing the normal running of the trains which daily take thousands of tourists between two of the princiapl destinations for holidays in Peru.
The problems have arisen because 7 years ago the government terminated the contract of FERSIMSAC, the previous company, and awarded a contract to PeruRail, owned by the Orient Express group. PeruRail have invested heavily in the infrastructure and rolling-stock for the rail link and, although there have been sharp price increases, they are generally recognised by those on holiday in Peru as doing a good job. They also proide employment for local people and work with communities along the line to minimise environmental impact. Because of this generally good relationship with local people, many suspect the strike action is more about national politics than real local grievances.
For the time being, Peru Rail have suspended their services and so Peru holidays involving a trip to Machu Picchu by train cannot go ahead. Services are expected to resume next week, now the central government has provided extra police to ensure there is no damage to the line or stations en route. Thankfully, no RealPeru customers have been affected by this action, which has occurred in the depths of the low season for holidays in Peru. We are continuing to keep an eye on the situation and will keep you advised on how it develops.
