A casual encounter with Walter Alva, the lead archaeologist in the Royal Tombs of Sipan team, led Peruvian scientist Cesar Alcorta Suero to investigate the diet of of the Lord of Sipan himself. What exactly did this person eat 2000 years ago? Well, accordingly to Alcorta Suero's results, his diet was both rich and varied, and included lobster, sole. squid, octopus, crabs, mussels, prawns, shrimps, kingfish, corn, yuca, potatoes, sweet potatoes, chilis and sea urchins!
The Lord of Sipan also enjoyed fruits such as Chirimoya, Lucuma, Blackberry, Grenadine and Strawberry, nuts, honey and dozens of seeds and grains - not bad for a "primitive" culture! If you'd like to see the Lord of Sipan's royal resting place for yourself then check out our 'Great Northern' tour!
