The north of Peru is relatively undiscovered compared to the famous photographs of Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and the Nazca Lines, but there are some real treasures which are only recently beginning to be appreciated. Perhaps foremost among these is the site of Chan-Chan, just outside Trujillo. This enormous adobe city (bigger than contemporary London) was the capital of the Chimu culture that arose just before the Incas and was eventually conquered by them. Chan Chan has been a World Heritage Site since 1986 but has always been threatened by the coastal climate, with erosion of the adobe walls being a prime concern. We're pleased to report, however, that a recent project has managed to restore a further 2.5km of these walls and so you can see even more of Chan Chan at its full glory!
And in another piece of news potentially making holidays in the north of Peru even easier, Tourism Galapagos, an Ecuadorean company, has announced that it is looking into running internal flights linking northern cities such as Cajamarca, Chiclayo, Piura and Tumbes, and also linking these cities directly by air to the south of Ecuador. This could mean that a trip to northern Peru could also easily link in to a holiday in Ecuador... more on this as we get it!
