Paracas Nature Reserve
Sandboarding in Huacachina
The Monkey, Nazca Lines
|
As you head south from Lima along the Pan-American highway, you pass through arid land intersected by fertile river valleys that were home to some of the most ancient of Peruvian cultures. The Nazca Lines are probably the most famous and mysterious of the many remains left by these cultures, and today you can take a flight over the Nazca Lines to appreciate them for yourself. Aside from that, nature-lovers should not miss the Paracas Nature Reserve and Ballestas Islands, while if you fancy some relaxation time you could do worse than head to the stunning desert oasis of Huacachina, near Ica!
The Nazca Lines
A few kilometres from the modern town of Nazca, the ancient culture of the same name carved huge geoglyphs into the desert. Today known as the Nazca Lines, they are so big that they can only be seen from above, which begs the question as to how they were made in the first place... Everyone has their own theory so, rather than take their word for it, why don't you go and see for yourself?

Pisco, Paracas and the Ballestas Islands
The town of Pisco is principally famous for the brandy of the same name, but it also useful as a base for tourists who want to visit the nearby Paracas Nature Reserve or take a boat trip out to the 'Peruvian Galapagos' of the Ballestas Islands. Paracas and the Ballestas are home to hundreds of different species of birds and marine life including dolphins, flamingos and sea-lions so if you're a nature-lover you'll kick yourself if you miss it.

Ica and Huacachina
The town of Ica is the biggest along the south coast of Peru and there's plenty to keep you occupied here. The regional museum is excellent and this is also a great place to try some criollo food. The best bit for us, however, is that just a short taxi journey away is the fabulous desert oasis of Huacachina. You can go sandboarding on the mountainous dunes, bathe in the medicinal waters, or just relax with a cool drink in the shade of a palm tree...
