The Inca Trail is one of Peru's real highlights, and something that many people want to fit into their holiday in Peru. However, this amazing and historic trail passes through several delicate ecosystems before arriving at the equally fragile site of Machu Picchu itself, and the Peruvian government have - quite correctly - now put in place measures to limit the number of people trekking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
In order to protect the trail, you now require a special government-issued Inca Trail permit, and only 500 of these are issued for each day of the year (excluding February when the whole trail is closed). You can use the calendar below to check and see whether there are permits available for the dates you were planning:
