Inca Trail to Close in February

You can trek the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu at any time you like on your Peru holidays - so long as it's not February! Although visitor numbers are restricted at other times of the year, all those trekkers following in the footsteps of the Incas do take their toll on the countryside so the goverment will be closing the Inca Trail this February in order to carry out maintenance work to repair any damage and prevent future problems.

Huge Success at the Grafham Water Marathon

We try and make sure that our Peru holidays support the 'Real Peru' but of course there are always parts of Peru that even the most adventurous tourists don't reach. That's one reason we were so pleased to support the Amantani organisation with their annual Grafham Water Marathon last week.

Limits on Machu Picchu Visits

Many people ask about fitting in Bolivia to their Peru holidays, and we're always keen to oblige, as we think there are some amazing things to see and do. Connectivity has always been the problem - going one way across Lake Titicaca is great fun but you don't necessarily want to do it both ways and although getting to La Paz has always been relatively straightforward, getting down to the south and then back to Peru for the rest of your holiday has often been quite tricky. Not any longer!

Limits on Machu Picchu Visits

Machu Picchu is obviously top of everyone's Peru holidays list, but new restrictions on the number of people allowed to enter Machu Picchu have been causing problems for people who did not have pre-bought tickets for the famous Inca citadel. Yesterday, around 150 tourists were left without entrance tickets at the INC office in Cusco, causing loud and stormy scenes, but the regional manager, Julio Garcia Rivas, explained that the limit of 2,500 tourists per day had been agreed with UNESCO and that breaching this limit would cause Machu Picchu to lose its coveted World Heritage Site status.

Machu Picchu Centenary Celebrations in London

2011 is a special year for Peru holidays, as this year marks the centennial celebrations of Machu Picchu’s re-discovery by the American explorer Hiram Bingham. Every year in Peru on 24th June, they hold Inti Raymi festivities to celebrate the Andean New Year and this date has been chosen to hold celebrations at Peru’s London Embassy to mark the anniversary of Hiram Bingham’s arrival at the famous Inca site.

Puno strikes affect travel to Cusco

The road from Puno to Cusco forms part of many Peru holidays, with stunning scenery and some interesting stop-offs along the way. Unfortunately just at the moment the main road is blocked by strike action as part of protests against the detention of the Aymara community leader, Walter Aduviri.

Ash Cloud Disruption to Peru Holidays

Almost exactly a year on from last years flight disruptions caused by the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano, the island nation is at it again with its Grimsvotn volcano trying to ruin our countries holiday plans this year. Luckily this time, however, it seems the effects of this new ash cloud will only cause a fraction of the disruption that last year’s events did.

Machu Picchu To Close

This year marks the centenary of the discovery of the greatest Peru holiday attraction of them all: Machu Picchu. Although its existence never passed out of local knowledge, it was Hiram Bingham who was to bring the ancient Inca citadel to the attention of the world when he trekked to the site in 1911. Celebrations to mark the event are due to take place on 7th July this year, with invitations having been extended to many local and international dignitaries and celebrities, as well as some of Bingham’s relatives. Unfortunately, this means that Machu Picchu will be closed to the public on 6th and 7th July and so no guided tours will be taking place on these days. Inca Trail treks due to end on either of those dates will also need to be re-scheduled. We will, of course, be in touch with you if we think this is going to affect your Peru holiday.

Inca Trail Permits Running Low

It's that time of year again - time to dust off those walking boots and start thinking about booking your Inca Trail to Machu Picchu! Usually by this time of year we're really running short of permits, even for the summer months, but actually this year is much more of a mixed picture. There are still some permits left for late March, and for some days in early April as well. Easter is then looking VERY busy and some dates in June are filling up as well.
