Cusco-La Paz Flights to Resume from June

A pleasing update for those travelling between Cusco and La Paz on their Peru holidays, with the news that Amaszonas Airlines will be stepping into the breach left by Aerosur last month, and from June 15th will be operating daily return flights (except Sundays) between La Paz and Cusco with a 50-seat Bombardier CRJ-200.

Peru Miners Strike Disrupts Road Travel

It may not feel like it, but you can always tell that the summer holidays are on the way as someone somewhere in Peru decides to go on strike! This week miners in Peru's southern provinces are striking which means the main Pan-American Highway south from Lima to Nazca is blocked while the miners negotiate with the government and unfortunately that means that road travel between Lima and Arequipa is proving very difficult at the moment.

Aerosur Flights from La Paz to Cusco Suspended

This year it has been even easier to include Bolivia in your Peru holidays, as direct flights between La Paz and Cusco have been operating four times a week with the Bolivian airline AeroSur. We've been using these regularly and have been pleased with the service, punctuality and just about everything else. So we were very disappointed to hear some rumours last week that all was not well with the Bolivian carrier. Sadly, those rumours have been proved correct, and we received notice from IATA on Friday that all Aerosur flights had been suspended until further notice.

Inca Trail Re-Opens

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu re-opened yesterday after its regular closure for the month of February. Treks in Peru aren't great fun in February in any case, as this is the peak of the raniy season, and so the agency in charge of the Inca Trail takes this chance to close the trail for a full month every year to carry out maintenance work and give the trail a chance to recover.

Machu Picchu Rail Link Closes

The undoubted highlight of most people's Peru holidays looked under threat this weekend as the rail link to Machu Picchu was temporarily suspended due to small-scale landslides along the route from Ollantaytambo to the famous Inca citadel. Although on nothing like the scale we saw two years ago, when trains were disrupted for days, the route was temporarily closed, meaning some holiday-makers had to remain in Aguas Calientes rather than returning to Cusco.

New Peru Beach Hotels

Many people like to include some beach time on their Peru holidays, and in the last few years there have been some welcome developments on Peru's south coast, particularly in the Paracas area. Now competition will be hotting up (no pun intended) even further, with the opening of San Agustin's new Paracas Beach hotel. All rooms will have a sea view and 2nd-floor rooms will all have balconies - it looks like a cracker and we can't wait to try it out.

Inca Trail to Close in February

You can trek the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu at any time you like on your Peru holidays - so long as it's not February! Although visitor numbers are restricted at other times of the year, all those trekkers following in the footsteps of the Incas do take their toll on the countryside so the goverment will be closing the Inca Trail this February in order to carry out maintenance work to repair any damage and prevent future problems.

Huge Success at the Grafham Water Marathon

We try and make sure that our Peru holidays support the 'Real Peru' but of course there are always parts of Peru that even the most adventurous tourists don't reach. That's one reason we were so pleased to support the Amantani organisation with their annual Grafham Water Marathon last week.

Increased Bolivia flights from Peru

Many people ask about fitting in Bolivia to their Peru holidays, and we're always keen to oblige, as we think there are some amazing things to see and do. Connectivity has always been the problem - going one way across Lake Titicaca is great fun but you don't necessarily want to do it both ways and although getting to La Paz has always been relatively straightforward, getting down to the south and then back to Peru for the rest of your holiday has often been quite tricky. Not any longer!

Limits on Machu Picchu Visits

Machu Picchu is obviously top of everyone's Peru holidays list, but new restrictions on the number of people allowed to enter Machu Picchu have been causing problems for people who did not have pre-bought tickets for the famous Inca citadel. Yesterday, around 150 tourists were left without entrance tickets at the INC office in Cusco, causing loud and stormy scenes, but the regional manager, Julio Garcia Rivas, explained that the limit of 2,500 tourists per day had been agreed with UNESCO and that breaching this limit would cause Machu Picchu to lose its coveted World Heritage Site status.

Machu Picchu Centenary Celebrations in London

2011 is a special year for Peru holidays, as this year marks the centennial celebrations of Machu Picchu’s re-discovery by the American explorer Hiram Bingham. Every year in Peru on 24th June, they hold Inti Raymi festivities to celebrate the Andean New Year and this date has been chosen to hold celebrations at Peru’s London Embassy to mark the anniversary of Hiram Bingham’s arrival at the famous Inca site.

Puno strikes affect travel to Cusco

The road from Puno to Cusco forms part of many Peru holidays, with stunning scenery and some interesting stop-offs along the way. Unfortunately just at the moment the main road is blocked by strike action as part of protests against the detention of the Aymara community leader, Walter Aduviri.
